Our Culture Is Different from Every Other Culture in History

Todd Friel looks at the current culture of western civilization’s foundation of secular humanism via an article by Gavin Ortlund called “3 Ways Our Culture Is Different from Every Other Culture in History”, observing God is in the (criminal’s) dock, morality is about self-expression, and life is starved of transcendence.  As an example, Todd shows a video clip of the transgender pastor Allyson Dylan Robinson.

Segment 1 (0:00) – Todd Friel looks at how America is no longer informed primarily by Christian truth but instead by secular humanism.  Todd uses Gavin Ortlund’s article “3 Ways Our Culture Is Different from Every Other Culture in History” focusing on the first point that God is in the (criminal’s) dock.  For example, earlier Christians like Anselm, as backed up by the observation of C.S. Lewis, had the foundation of God’s justice where today divine mercy and not define justice is assumed.  A clip of John Cleese on the “Real Time with Bill Maher” shows this current reality.

Segment 2 (11:20) – Todd Friel explores secular humanism through point two of Gavin Ortlund’s article “3 Ways Our Culture Is Different from Every Other Culture in History” looking at how morality is about self-expression.  In the past, it was assumed external reality was fixed.  Now, everything is okay as long as it does not inhibit self-expression.

Segment 3 (17:19) – Todd Friel explores secular humanism through point three of Gavin Ortlund’s article “3 Ways Our Culture Is Different from Every Other Culture in History” looking at how life is starved of transcendence.  Many things are better now this day and age, yet we struggle more than ever to find pleasure, purpose, and identity.  To typify the three points in Gavin’s article, Todd shows a video clip of the transgender pastor Allyson Dylan Robinson responding to a marriage equality ruling.
