– Episode 1828 –
Pastors and Gimmicks – by Phil Johnson
Use of gimmickry in the pulpit. Serious business to cause one of these little ones to stumble.
Segment 1 (0:00) – Pastors & Gimmicks – referencing the Shepherd’s Conference with Phil Johnson; addressing false teachers and pastors who try to help the message of the Gospel with something “more interesting”. 2 Corinthians 4 – Pastors should be ambassadors who proclaim the Word as both content & goal of apostolic preaching.
Segment 2 (8:01) – Mistake #1 these wolves in sheep’s clothing make: Try to be clever/tamper with the Word using same cunning as Satan & the Pharisees; fishing for the applause acceptance & admiration of men (AAA).
Segment 3 (17:00) – “Pastors” who try to be Clever, Cunning Cool, & mistake #2 – Coy (CCCC) being as indirect as possible, reluctant to tell the truth, avoiding any possibility of feeling guilt (I hear the clip of Steve Lawson imitating Joel Osteen). Pastors should speak Biblical preaching to the conscience, not only intellect & humor. Best starting place: the Law (which leads to guilt) One more C to go next time.
